Pelvic Floor Rehab

What is Pelvic Floor Rehab?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the base of the pelvis between your sitz bones. They attach to the pubic bone in front and the tailbone in back and they surround the urethra, vagina, penis and anus. When these muscles are weak and uncoordinated or when they cannot fully relax, you may develop urinary issues, bowel issues, incontinence, prolapse of pelvic organs, pelvic pain or painful penetration, or if you’re pregnant, this may challenge your desired delivery outcomes. Pelvic floor rehab helps these and surrounding muscles work properly to improve or eliminate your problematic issues.

When is pelvic floor rehab needed?

Pelvic floor rehab is needed when you have

  • urinary issues

  • bowel issues

  • incontinence

  • prolapse of pelvic organs

  • pelvic pain or painful penetration

  • if you’re pregnant and looking to have more successful delivery outcomes.

Some patients have both pelvic floor issues and changes in their sexual function or desire after cancer treatment or other big life changes.  We can determine together the best combination of both physical therapy and talk sexuality counseling to best improve your quality of life.

What to expect on your first visit?

Your PT will ask many questions about your bladder, bowel and sexual function. She will then examine the pelvic floor muscles with a vaginal or rectal exam (with your consent). Together you will then determine the best treatment plan.

Sexual Health Counseling

What is Sexuality Counseling?

Sexuality counseling is generally short-term and patient-centered, focusing on the immediate sexual concern or problem. We sit together and talk, sometimes incorporating short activities when needed. If you also need pelvic floor physical therapy, we start there and then move into sexuality counseling a bit later.

Fantastic summary of the types of subjects we tackle

When is sexuality counseling needed?

  • If your low sexual desire is problematic

  • If you seek to regain your sense of vitality and/or connection to your body

  • If you and your partner(s) have sexual dissatisfaction or desire discrepancies

  • If you’re struggling with sexual anxiety or performance issues

If you’re seeking information about sexual health or exploring your sexual identity

What to expect on your first visit?

You will have been given some questions to answer about your sexuality and your goals for counseling. We discuss these questions as well as your sexual history to determine your individualized plan of care (usually between 3 and 6 talk sessions–in person or Telehealth). You’ll likely leave with some homework either to do alone or with your partner(s) on that first day.

“Cancer is a lifelong journey that has a way of engraving one’s life forever. Few doctors tell you about the ongoing side effects of cancer; vaginal dryness, painful sex, lost libido, etc… I was given numerous options for all these things by well-meaning doctors for years and none of it worked. I was finally referred to Erin by my new gynecologist. After years of searching for answers, I was extremely skeptical.

Well, thank goodness I took the chance! Erin is a saving grace in a world that no one wants to talk about. She knows immediately how to put a client at ease in talking about difficult subject matters. She made numerous suggestions and was always eager to hear the results. If nothing worked – we tried something else. Erin’s expertise goes beyond just the physical issues at hand. She understands that the body and mind are connected and offers recommendations that encompass both.

Erin was able to help me move forward on my journey when it seemed that no one else could. Take the chance and go see her – she’s a breath of fresh air and you won’t be just ‘another patient’ to her!” -–patient treated for pelvic health PT and sexuality counseling
